District council waste collectors face transfer to the private sector

STAFFORDSHIRE Moorlands District Council is set to transfer its waste collection service into the hands of a private contractor.

Council bosses forecast the switch will save the authority around £1 million over the next four years.

The chosen contractor, Ansa, already collects household waste for Cheshire East Council and will also be responsible for street cleaning, grounds maintenance and fleet management.

The Moorlands Council, which is in alliance with Derbyshire-based High Peak Borough Council, spends £8.2 million a year on the latter services.

Council employees affected by the changes will be transferred over to Ansa over the next 18 months.
