Hospital and university fires: Accused man referred to crown court

NORTH Staffordshire magistrates have referred a 39 year old Sheffield to crown court to face two charges of arson with intent to endanger life.

Thomas Ashcroft is accused of deliberately starting fires in the disabled toilet at Staffordshire University’s Beacon Building and in a corridor at the Royal Stoke University Hospital on Wednesday, June 7.

Mr Ashcroft, who entered no pleas at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre, was remanded in custody and will appear via a video link at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday, July 3.
