LEEK Town’s pre-season programme kicked off with a hugely impressive 9-1 win away to Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division champions Abbey Hulton United last night.
The result was a wake-up call for the Abbey who have taken an ambitious step up into the North West Counties League for their 2017/18 campaign.
Neil Baker had a full-strength squad at his disposal, together with a number of trialists, to mark his return as Blues boss.
Leek gave a strong hint of what was to come when Tim Grice, pictured left, put them ahead after just five minutes, but not before their hosts had stunned them with an equaliser 14 minutes later.
Jonny Higham regained the lead for Leek in the 35th minute and four minutes after the break the impressive Troy Baker made it 3-1.
Grice scored his second goal 20 minutes later as Baker began to make a series of substitutions.
Rob Stevenson came off the bench to score Leek’s fifth goal after 72 minutes and Dany Shelley added a sixth two minutes later as the home side began to tire.
Baker then introduced Jordan Johnson from the bench and he quickly responded by making it 7-1 on 83 minutes.
Fellow substitute Chris Budrys then completed the rout by adding further goals in the 88th and 90th minutes.
Blues can expect a much tougher test when they face Stoke U23’s at Harrison Park tomorrow (Saturday. The game kicks off at 2pm.
