Man charged with manslaughter following hospital fire

A 39-year-old Sheffield man has been charged with manslaughter following a fire at the Royal Stoke University Hospital in June.

Thomas Ashcroft, of Musgrave Crescent, Sheffield, appeared at Stafford Crown Court today  (July 18) on a charge of manslaughter.
The charge is in relation to the death of May Maxfield, 89, from Camillus Road, Newcastle-under-Lyme. Following a post-mortem it is suspected that May died as a result of the fire and subsequent evacuation.
Fire broke out at the hospital’s main building at around 6pm on June 7. Patients had to be temporarily evacuated.
Earlier in the evening, at around 4.45pm, fire broke out in toilets in the Beacon Building on Staffordshire University’s College Road campus.
Ashcroft was already charged on June 9 with arson with intent to endanger life in relation to these alleged offences.
He has been remanded in custody. A pre-trial preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 29.
