Saturday football results round-up – and a winning horse!

IT was a miserable afternoon for Leek Town, who lost their opening league game away to league newcomers Alvechurch 3-1, and had skipper Darren Chadwick sent off in the 83rd minute.

Alvechurch, last season’s Midland League Premier Division champions, dominated the game and at one stage led 3-0 through goals from  Luke Yates (13mins), Josh March (56 mins) and Tom Turton 69 mins – pen), before Tim Grice pulled a goal back for Blues in the 74th minute, heading in from a Dan Shelley free kick.

HORSE RACING

THE Basford Green stables of Jennie Candlish sent out Show Place to win the final race on the card at Haydock Park this afternoon.

The four year old, ridden by Joe Fanning, got up by over a length to take the 5f Betfred Mobile Handicap, landing rewarding odds of 4/1 for punters.
