Homes plan for Cheadle sparks controversy about increased traffic

FEARS have been expressed that Cheadle’s busy road network won’t be able to cope with a proposed new housing development in the town.

Plans have been submitted for 121 homes to be built on the site of the former JCB factory on Oakamoor Road.

Nearby resident Gillian Smith said: It is already hard to get onto Leek Road and this [development] would just make it worse. It is a very busy road with Alton Towers traffic.”

JCB bought the former Cecily Mills textile factory site in 1982 and remained there until last year.

B Cheadle Property Holdings have applied to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council outline planning permission to develop the 3.85 hectare site.

Access to the proposed development would be via Oakamoor Road and Churchill Road.

A resdiential link road would stop vehivles using King Edward Street and Cecily Street.

District planners are expected to make a decision on the scheme within the next few months.
