Police issue warning after spate of distraction burglaries

POLICE are reminding people to be wary when answering the door to unexpected callers, following a number of recent distraction burglaries involving bogus water or electricity board officials.

On Tuesday (Jan 9) there were four such incidents in Stoke-on-Trent, when the offenders claimed to be from the water or electricity board to gain entry to the properties.

The incidents all took place between 4.30pm and 7.30pm on Bayham Walk, Bucknall; Uffington Parade, Bentilee; Whitley Road, Ball Green; and Hurst Street, Longton.

The victims were distracted by a man ‘checking’ the taps or switches in various rooms, while a second man located and stole valuables from the home.

The offenders are described as white males, aged between 25–40 years old, and wearing dark clothing with high visibility sleeveless vests.

Residents are urged to contact the police immediately if they have suspicions about visitors to their homes, and are reminded not to trust callers without a prior appointment.

Anyone with information about any of the recent incidents is asked to call Staffordshire Police on 101.
