Star Ascending shines brightly for a third time at Southwell races

RACE horse trainer Jennie Candlish has a rising star at her Basford Green stables near Leek.

Jockey Joe Fanning

He’s an improving six year old chestnut called rather appropriately Star Ascending.

The star of Jennie’s Staffordshire Moorlands yard won for a third time in five visits to Southwell racecourse today.

Each of the gelding’s three wins have come under Dublin-born northern-based jockey Joe Fanning.

Today’s renewal of their partnership saw Star Ascending cruise to a comfortable victory in the concluding 1m 4f race on the all-weather at the Notts course.

Fanning sat quietly with a double-handful before giving a gentle shake of the reins a furlong out to ease his charge past the winning post.

Star Ascending is owned by local businessman Paul Wright-Bevans and looks set for more success in the coming weeks on today’s showing with Fanning in the saddle.
