Mayor’s casting vote stops proposed council tax increase

LEEK’S town mayor has stopped a proposed hike in council tax. 

Brian Johnson, pictured, used his casting vote to reject an increase after voting was tied at 4-4 when members scrutinised the budget plan for 2018-19.

The total amount of income to be raised from council tax will remain at just over £141,000.

Expenditure includes a £10,700 grant to the Citizens Advice Bureau and £2,200 to support Leek Arts Festival, £37,000 for Christmas activities and £7,000 for the annual Party in the Park.

Other expenditure includes a total of £64,919 to meet staff and office costs.
