LEEK Town bowed out of the Staffs FA Senior Cup to Stoke City U23s at the quarter-final stage last night.
Blues played with great credit and were drawing 2-2 up until the closing stages, before Lasse Sorenson (85 mins) and Ryan Hill (90 mins) wrapped up a victory for the cup holders.
Stoke led 1-0 at the interval with a 39th minute goal from Shola Ayoola, but Rob Stevenson levelled for Blues just three minutes into the second-half.
Danny Roberts pulled off a 67th minute penalty save to stop Stoke from regaining the lead, but he was beaten by Vanacio Monteiro in the 79th minute.
However, Blues responded immediately with a goal from Joe Kearns to make it 2-2 before Stoke had the final say with their late double strike.
The non-appearance of Stoke’s rising young star Tyrese Campbell – scorer of a hat-trick against Fulham U23s on Saturday – gave rise to speculation that he could be in the first team squad for Saturday’s trip to Leicester City in the Premier League this Saturday.
