AFTER their exhausting historic Leek Cup quarter-final clash with their reserve team Leek CSOB make a quick return to serious cup action at Pointon Park, Cheddleton, tomorrow night (Wednesday).
Old Boys face Premier Division leaders Wolstanton United in the semi-final of the Staffs County Senior League Challenge Cup.
The two teams drew 2-2 when they met in the league at Wolstanton back in August.
Sincen then Wolstanton have dropped just five points in 17 league outings and stand 10 points clear at the top of the table.
Old Boys are sixth in the table on 30 points but have played two less games than Wolstanton.
Saturday’s first-ever clash between the Old Boys two senior teams in competition warmed the hearts of spectators braving the cold.
Before the game, the players, club officials and supporters joined in a minute’s applause in memory of the club’s long-serving chairman Ken Hill, who died last year, and 12 year old Dylan Day, pictured, a member of the club’s under-14 team, who passed away in hospital last month after contracting a deadly strain of influenza.
Dylan’s former team mates were at the match and children from the club’s under-7s squad (pictured) accompanied the players onto the pitch as mascots on what was an emotional occasion.
Mark Timothy fired the first team after just four minutes but the reserves fought back to go 2-1 up through Steve Briand and George Butler.
Jamie Pointon equalised for the firsts but Ben Venables put the seconds back in front 3-2.
The lead then exchanged hands again when Eddie Ellis and Mark Fox struck to put the firsts 4-3 ahead.
Again the reserves responded to equalise through Sam Chawner only for Liam Morris to score an 89th minute for the seniors.
Tomorrow night’s game will kick off at 7.30pm subject to the pitch (currently frozen over) beating the weather.
The winners will meet Cheadle Town in the final on Wednesday, March 28.
