GROVE Silver showed tremendous battling qualities to win for Basford Green trainer Jennie Candlish (pictured) at Carlise Races today.
The horse looked in danger being passed by Major Hindrance in the final furlong after leading from the start in the 2m 4f 188Bet Handicap Chase.
However, the nine year old edged ahead under the driving of jockey Sean Quinlan to get up by half a length to win the race for the second year running.
Grove Silver opened up the betting at 9/4 but was backed down to 13/8 to land the odds for favourite backers. The horse is owned by Alan Baxter.
Star Ascending, chasing a fifth win on the trot on the flat on the all-weather, failed to make it an across the card double for the Staffordshire Moorlands yard, racing at Southwell, finishing a disappointing fourth in an apprentice 1m 3f race under Irish claimer Connor Murtagh at the Nottinghamshire course.
