THE Endon and Stoke-on-Trent Chernobyl Children’s Project group has been hosting teenagers, children and mothers and children for the last 19 years.
It has found that the holiday in North Staffordshire makes a tremendous difference to the lives of the young people, both physically and psychologically.
The group are very grateful for all the support given each year from local churches, Rotary clubs, WI’s, schools and businesses, without whom this project would not be possible.
Doctors say that the four weeks away from their contaminated homeland can boost a child’s damaged immune system for up to two years.
The catastrophic accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near Pripyat, in what was then part of the USSR, occurred on 26 April 1986.
Since then many, many lives have been affected by the nuclear fallout resulting from the disaster.
