Join RSBP in the Churnet Valley to enjoy a bug safari!

The RSPB’s Coombes Valley nature reserve near Leek is inviting families to join them in a big bug hunt day! Learn how to identify some of the creepy crawlies that live at Coombes Valley.

From sweep netting to pond and stream dipping, there will be plenty of things to see, do and learn! Use a pooter to get a better look at some mini bugs or frolic around a meadow with a sweep net to discover what lurks in amongst the grasses and flowers. Our friendly staff and volunteers will be on hand to help you get to grips with the tricky art of identifying what is found.

Mollie Latham, spokesperson for the RSPB says: “This event is a great opportunity to get up close to the mysterious world of Churnet Valley bug life. We will give families the chance to find out how we survey in different types of habitat and learn how to identify what you find.”

There will even be a chance to discover what exciting species have been caught in the moth trap overnight!

This event is taking place thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) helping us to acquire our new land in the Churnet Valley called Bellpit Meadows. Although we won’t be visiting Bellpit on the day, HLF are keen to find out what sorts of bugs live in the area! So, let’s rally the troops and work as a team to find as many bugs as possible here at Coombes Valley!

This event will be held at Coombes Valley on Sunday the 27 th of May from 11 am – 3 pm. £5 per child with 20% off for members.
