Blaze at Cheadle care facility was started deliberately

STAFF and residents were evacuated when fire broke out at specialist care home in Cheadle last night.

Firefighters from Cheadle and Longton tackled the blaze which caused extensive damage to a first-floor apartment at the Woodhouse Independent Hospital in Lockwood Road.

The 48-bed care facility caters for people with learning disabilities and mental health issues.

No-one was injured but one resident was checked over by paramedics as a precaution.

Fire crews were despatched to the incident shortly after 8.40pm and police were later called after an investigation established the fire was started deliberately.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “The nursing home has chosen to deal with the matter internally so no police involvement was deemed necessary.”
