Spreading blaze has destroyed more than 200 acres of moorland

TWO hundred acres of moorland has now been destroyed by the blaze which is ravaging a moorlands beauty spot a few miles out of Leek.

Firefighters continue to work hard in difficult conditions to try and contain the spread of fire on The Roaches, at Upperhulme, which broke out four days ago.

Their efforts have been hampered by persistent strong winds crossing one of the highest and most exposed parts of the Staffordshire Moorlands. Smoke from the incident has been reported as far away as Chesterfield in Derbyshire.

Firefighters from neighbouring counties are assisting Staffordshire crews in tackling the incident which has had a devastating affect on wildlife.

Roads remain closed in the area and the public are again urged to stay away.
