Some relief for motorists as roadworks are lifted for a weekend

A ROAD closure is being lifted for a weekend while other work takes place nearby.

New Road, Uttoxeter, is currently closed to traffic in both directions from the Shell garage entrance for approximately 400 yards west towards Tunnicliffe Way.

But it will be completely reopened to all vehicles from 6pm on Friday, November 16  until 9.30am on Monday, November 19.

The reopening coincides with work on the nearby A50, which will be closed during the night that weekend.

Not before 9.30am on Monday, November 19 the New Road roadworks will be reinstated in the same place outside the Shell garage and continue until Friday, November 30, with the same diversions as before.

Mark Winnington, pictured, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for Jobs and Growth, said: “The New Road closure is necessary to install ducts and pipes for future power, broadband and energy supply needs for housing and industry in the area, as well as integrating the carriageway into the approach to the new A50 roundabouts.

“The work is on schedule, but we also need to do some work on the A50 to tie in slip roads after the recent bridge demolition and although the A50 closures are being restricted to overnight we can’t have both that and New Road closed at the same time.”

He added: “We’re only a couple of months away from completion and I would like to thank everyone for their patience as we reach the last stages of incorporating the new bridge and roundabouts into the A50.

Once fully open this will reduce congestion and improve road safety, while supporting the creation of new homes and more jobs.”

The A50 will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5.30am, for three nights on Friday, November 16, Saturday, November 17 and Sunday, November 18. On the Saturday and Sunday, between 5.30am and 8pm the inside lanes will be closed in both directions to protect the work done overnight.

The full closures will be between the A521 roundabout at Blythe Bridge and the B5030 roundabout at Uttoxeter.

The diversion route will be the same for vehicles travelling in both directions. From the east, traffic will be diverted northwards from the A50 at Uttoxeter on to the B5030 for a few hundred yards to the roundabout with the A518. Traffic will turn right there, cross back over the A50 along The Dove Way and continue on the A518 clockwise around Uttoxeter and follow the road towards Stafford. Vehicles will then follow the A51 and A34 towards Stoke-on-Trent, before joining the A500 and then the A50 to Blythe Bridge. The route is reversed from the west.

After New Road has reopened by the Shell garage, the A522 is also scheduled for complete closure north of the A50, between the new roundabout and JCB World Parts Centre, from 8pm on Friday, November 30 to 5.30am on Monday, December 3.

Pedestrian and bicycle access between Uttoxeter and JCB will be maintained throughout the weekend, but all other traffic will be diverted while the new permanent section of the A522 is tied in with the existing carriageway. Travelling from Uttoxeter, traffic will join the A50 at the new junction, continue to Blythe Bridge and take the A521 to Tean  and then the A522 towards Lower Tean and Checkley. Travelling to Uttoxeter the route is reversed.
