Thousands to receive a winter heating subsidy after recent freezing cold spell

THOUSANDS of people in North Staffordshire affected by the recent freezing weather are to receive help paying their heating bills.

The icy blast at the end of last month saw temperatures drop to as low as -8 degC in exposed parts of the Staffordshire Moorlands.

It was enough to trigger the Government £25 winter subsidy to people receiving pension credit, disability  benefits or other income-related benefits, such as universal credit, living in certain ST postcode areas.

Altogther around 10,000 people – including 5,000 pensioners – qualify for the payment, which relates to the period between January 29 to February 4, depending on where they live.
