Brave firefighter loses his battle against crippling condition

STAFFORDSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service is in mourning for one of its most popular firefighters.
Gary Bowcock, from Leek, has passed away after losing his brave battle against motor-neurone disease.

Firefighter Gary Bowcock.

He was a firefighter for 29 years and served as a crew commander at the Longton station, before being diagnosed by the muscle-wasting condition in October 2017. It affects one in 50,000 people.
Gary brought forward his marriage to his fiance, Cheryl Bestwick, last July, after his condition worsened and led to him becoming wheelchair-bound.
Colleagues at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Sevice launched a £10,000 appeal so that a downstairs toilet, wet room and bedroom could be installed in the garage at his Leek home.
Many tributes are being paid to Gary on social media.

Gary’s funeral will take place at St Luke’s Church, in Fountain Street, Leek, on Friday, April 26 (2pm).
