UTTOXETER Cricket Club have been paid a surprise visit by two England players ahead of opening the 2019 season at their new Marchington base this Saturday.
All-rounder Chris Woaks and women’s team batsman Daniel Wyatt spent a day at the Jack’s Lane ground courtesy of CricketForce, the England Cricket Board’s (ECB’s) project to boost the game at grassroots level.
The occasion was filmed by Sky Sports and saw the two international stars, with paint brushes in hand, help club volunteers help prepare the facilities for the new season.
The cricket club’s future was put in doubt after they were forced out of their home for the last 60 years – Uttoxeter Racecourse.
The racecourse management decided not to renew the club’s lease for commercial reasons.
Luckily, Marchington parish council stepped in to offer the club a new home at the dormant cricket ground in the village.
The ground has stood ‘mothballed’ since Marchington CC folded in 2004.
Uttoxeter CC chairman James Burton said: “The future of Uttoxeter Cricket Club is now secure and we are very much looking forward to the new season ahead.”
He added: “Our Cricket Force national showcase was absolutely incredible.
“We could not have wished for a better day and we are delighted with the tremendous support we received.
“Our members and the local community of Marchington really got involved to help improve our facilities.
“The presence of Chris Woakes and Danielle Wyatt helped to make the day truly memorable.
“Both are superb ambassadors for cricket and they posed for endless photographs throughout the day.
