Oakamoor ladies softball cricket team soaking up the sun in Spain

OAKAMOOR ladies softball cricket team have been crowned International Club Champions for the second successive year in La Manga, Spain.

A fantastic bowling display by Deb Harvey started the first day of the competition off with a flyer as five wickets fell in her first over.
Oakamoor followed up with some explosive batting from openers Sarah and Cheryl Carnwell, which meant victory was quickly sealed.
By the end of day one Oakamoor were sitting firmly at the top of the group stages leader board, having won all four of their games, including against Wales and the Spanish international team.
The following day Charlotte Brunt’s accurate and consistent bowling – just like her England ladies namesake – helped to keep the opposition totals within solid reaching distance, as the Oakamoor team progressed from the last four into the final.
The climax of the competition arrived with victory riding on a repeat win against closest rivals Wales.
The match got off to a rocky start with a couple of early wickets, but some strong hitting at the end of the innings by Alison Turner progressed Oakamoor to a respectable score of 258.
Last year’s best bowling winner, Elizabeth Sherratt, held her nerve and helped Oakamoor dismiss the Welsh team for 216. .
Oakamoor coach Ben Harvey said:” It is a pleasure to work with such a dedicated bunch of ladies.
” I was nervous for them going into the second day but knew that we had a few runs left in us – and boy did some of the women produce just when needed!”
Oakamoor are hoping to return La Manga in 2020 for a chance to defend their title..
But for now the ladies will be concentrating on developing their skills during the monthly outdoor softball tournaments, their next fixture being on May19 at Ashcombe Park.
Anyone interested in taking up ladies softball cricket is invited to Oakamoor’s coaching sessions, held every Thursday at the Davies Worthington sports ground (6.30pm).
The club is always welcoming new players regardless of ability and experience.
