UTTOXETER 1st XV began their Midlands West 3 League campaign with a well fought 19-14 victory away at Handsworth.
It was no surprise then when Uttoxeter got the first points of the game when Batista-Cabrera who touched down for a cracking try, which was converted by Marshall
Just before half time Handsworth were able to level the scores with a converted try of their own which was no more than they deserved.
Handsworth began the second half the stronger of the two sides and scored a further converted try to increase their lead to 14-7. This was during a 10 minute spell when the town side were down to 14 men with Tom Conlon sin-binned for various infringements.
Although Uttoxeter’s effort could not be faulted, they were guilty of trying too hard to get through their phases
.With 20 minutes to go, Uttoxeter got a stroke of luck when the ball bounced kindly for Knox to scoop up and sprint from 70 metres out for a breathtaking try close to the posts which was converted by Marshall, levelling the scores at 14-14.
.In the final five minutes, Uttoxeter put together some excellent attacking phases which culminated in winger Bassett scorching inv to the corner for an unconverted try.
This weekend, Uttoxeter’s first team travel to old adversaries Bakewell to compete in the first round of the National Junior Vase.
