Mark got out of a hole lot of trouble to claim county golf matchplay title

WESTWOOD Golf Club’s Mark Gayes is celebrating winning the Staffordshire Men’s Matchplay Golf Championship.
He staged a remarkable turnaround in the two-legged final against Enville’s Jake McGoldrick, which was staged home and away over 36 holes.
Mark, who plays off plus 3, qualified for the final by finishing in the top eight in the Staffs Amateur Championships at Newcastle in June.
The 39-year-old was six shots down at the end of the first leg, played at Enville, but he levelled the return leg at the Leek course and took it to a sudden death play-off, which he won at the first hole.
Mark told The Sentinel: “I went into the second leg at Westwood looking just to play for pride and pull the score back to something more respectable, but I played some of my best golf ever rto turn it around.”
