ALEX Mellor is returning to Leek Cricket Club as their 1st XI captain for the 2020 season.
He will also be assisting with coaching at Highfield after not having his contract renewed by the Edgbaston-based Bears.
Alex, 28, made nine first-class appearances for the Bears since joining in 2015.
He was part of the county’s One Day Cup winning side in 2016.
Alex has spent the last four years playing in the Birmingham League for Leamington and Walsall respectively in between his Warwickshire duties.
He was recently called up by Staffordshire to play against Norfolk at Longton, helping his home county clinch the Unicorns Eastern Division title.
Warwickshire have also released 21-year-old pace bowler and former academy member George Panayi
Warwickshire sport director Paul Farbrace said: “It’s always sad when we have to release players.
“I would thank (them) for everything that they have given to the club.”
Alex told The Sentinel’s Chris Travers: “Leek is the major reason I’m the cricketer I am today, so it’s good to be back and be able to repay members for how they’ve helped me.”
