Rugby Union: Uttoxeter 1st XV waste opportunity to go top of the table

Man of the match James Gill.

Telford 1st XV 19, Uttoxeter 1st XV 5
UTTOXETER missed an opportunity to go top of MidlandsThree West North as they put in a below par performance against a typically solid Telford side.
Telford put the first points on the board when Uttoxeter conceded a penalty some metres out.
The hosts extended their lead to 6-0 within 10 minutes as Uttoxeter again conceded an unforced penalty.
Telford conceded a penalty for not rolling away, but unfortunately Uttoxeter fly half Ben Marshall dragged his effort off target.
Uttoxeter full back Tom Sherratt appeared to have broken clean through only to be taken out by a Telford high tackle, which resulted in a yellow card for the offender.
The visitors finally got on the score sheet when Tom Hayes took contact from a tight phase and the ball was quickly recycled by Aaron Lakin.
Tom Gallimore sent the ball out wide and centre Nick Palmer aimed a looping pass out wide to the onrushing James Gilll. The experienced winger handed off a cover tackler before diving over in the corner for an unconverted try.
At haf-time Uttoxeter prop Sam Woolley was replaced by Ant Davies
Telford looked to move the ball around more in the second half and attacking the blind side on a number of occasions enable them to make breaks.
Uttoxeter covered well to make the tackles but their over eagerness in the breakdown lead to a further unforced error gifting Telford a penalty right infront of the sticks, which the home side converted to extend their lead to 9-5.
Minutes later Uttoxeter were penalised for an offside and Telford’s lead moved to 12-5
Just as Uttoxeter began to make some progress an injury to Ben Marshall disrupted the visitors. Liam Dyche replaced Marshall and Adam Tortoishell was repaced by Jordan Hale who made a welcome return with his first appearance of the season.
Uttoxeter began to put pressure on the hosts but a communication error allowed Telford’s winger to run through and touch down for an unconverted try.
Uttoxeter continued to push for points, with both Henry Knox and Dyche making some good forays into Telford’s half, but the visitors were unable to capitalise and Telford kept Uttoxeter at bay to make the final score 19-5.
Man of the match was awarded to stalwart James Gill who had a superb match in defence and attack capped off with a great try.
This Saturday Uttoxeter have a good chance to get back to winning ways when they travel to Willenhall.
