Brighten up Christmas for elderly people who live alone in your neighbourhood

CHRISTMAS is the loneliest time of the year for more than 1.5m older people, according to a new Age UK report.
Over 9 million people in the UK – almost a fifth of the population – say they are often or always lonely. Over 25,000 won’t speak to anyone this week and 200,000 people in the UK will spend Christmas Day alone.
Almost a million older people in Britain don’t know even their closest neighbour and research shows that they don’t reach out because they don’t want to impose, or because of the Great British ‘stiff upper lip.’
Being lonely can cause misery, avoidable illness and even death for too many older people.
#DoingOurBit is sending a rallying call to everyone this Christmas to just say hello to someone who might be lonely, call in on older neighbours or do something else to help.
Small things and a friendly face can make all the difference.
