Thursday Sport: Leek Town Ladies have regional cup final date

LEEK Town Ladies face Stockingford Pavillion in the West Midlands Regional Women’s League Cup Final at the Stone Dominoes ground in Yarnfield this Sunday (10.30am).

The odds are stacked heavily in favour of Stockingford of lifting the trophy, after they recently defeated Leek Town 6-2 to claim the Division One North championship unbeaten.

However, Leek manager Ian Smith refuses to be intimidated by the free-scoring Warwickwhire-based side.

Stockingford beat Billbrook 5-0 in the quarter-finals and Stone Dominoes 4-1 in the semi-finals, but the Leek team, pictured, have been equally impressive.

The Blues fought back from 2-0 to defeat Shrewsbury Town 3-2 away in the quarter-finals and then hammered Tamworth 10-0 at home to book their place in this weekend’s final being played at Wellbeing Park in Yarnfield Lane.

Smith said: “We are underdogs but if we can take our best game to the final then it’s not beyond our young team.

It’s an amazing achievement to get to a final in the (West Midlands) Regional League which covers five or six counties.”
