THE Leek and District Sunday League kicked off the new season with four newcomers within its ranks – AFC Ipstones, Black Lion (Cheddleton), Breaks Athletic and Prince of Wales.
There was no shortage of goals (36) on the opening day, with league champions Golden Lion the biggest scorers, beating Bulls Head 11-0.
Lion roared ahead after just five minutes through Jermaine James and Mike Harrison quickly claimed a brace (9 and 26 mins), and James scored his second (35 mins) with Jordan Lomas (36 mins) making it 5-0 at the break.
Bulls Head were no better after the re-start as Lion blasted three goals in a space of seven minutes through Aaron Walker (46), Craig Hayes (47) and Jones (52).
Harrison completed his brace on the hour mark and Dave Barratt (80) and Danny Hayes (84) completed the rout.
It could have been many more but for a heroic performance by Bulls Head keeper Simon Gates.
The battle of the newcomers saw Breaks Athletic (Adrian Findlow 4, Tom Johnson, Miles Chadwick) beat Ipstones (Muhammet Karaoglon, George Tatlow) 6-2, while Prince of Wales (Greg Johnson 3, Ben Venables, Jake Gordon, James Floyd ) made a winning debut with a 6-1 success against Moorlands Athletic (Ben McMann).
