Tuesday Sport: Jennie’s stable star keeps on ascending

RACEHORSE Star Ascending made it four wins from six visits to Southwell Races for Staffordshire Moorlands trainer Jennie Candlish today (Feb 13).

The six year old chestnut romped to victory in the opening Betway Apprentice Handicap 1m 4f race on the all-weather track under Edward Greatrex (pictured).

Each of the gelding’s three previous wins at the Notts course had come in the hands of senior jockey Joe Fanning.

However, the change of pilot made no difference to the progressive ‘star’, owned by local businessman Paul Wright-Bevans, as he romped clear of his 12 rivals in the final furlong.

It was the 11th winner in five seasons for 19 year old Greatrex, who is the son of leading Lambourn-based jumps trainer Warren Greatrex.

Last night’s scheduled Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division fixture between Knypersley Victoria and Cheadle Town was postponed.

Tomorrow night’s League Challenge Cup semi-final between Leek CSOB and Wolstanton United has been switched to Newcastle Town FC, because Leek’s pitch at Pointon Park, Cheddleton is waterlogged.
