FORMER Leek skipper Alex Thompson has made a big impression during his first season as a professional with Warwickshire CCC.
So much so that the 24-year-old all-rounder was recognised at the end-of-season awards ceremony.
A stunned Alex, pictured left, who was recruited by the Bears last year, after catching the eye with Staffordshire, was invited to step forward after being named Warwickshire second team player of the season.
Alex made his List A debut against West Indies A in a 50-over contest, ahead of making his first debut against Lancashire in a Twenty20 Blast fixture.
“The award came as a bit of a surprise,” said Alex. “There’s a lot of talented players in the dressing room who have turned in some outstanding performances.”
Alex played two County Championship games at the end of the season as the Bears reclaimed their Division One place at the first attempt.
Both he and his former Leek and Staffordshire team mate, wicketkeeper/batsman Alex Mellor, pictured right, have been rewarded with extended contracts by Warwickshire.
