RUNCORN Linnets emphatically despatched Leek Town 4-1 from the Integro League Cup second round at Harrison Park tonight.
The newcomers to the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League were too good for a Blues side showing a number of changes from Saturday’s 3-2 league defeat at Colne on Saturday.
Blues goalscorer Aaron Bott
Last season’s North West Counties League Premier Division champions have made a big impact on their entry to the NPL this year and it was their second victory over the Blues this month.
Neil Baker’s side were hoping to gain revenge for the 1-0 league defeat inflicted on them at Runcorn at the beginning of November.
But the high-flying Linnets, currently second in the new West Division table, are not for grounding and built up a 2-0 lead with goals from Danny O’Brien (24 mins pen) and Freddie Potter (57 mins) before substitute Aaron Bott (70 mins) reduced the deficit.
However, further goals from Potter again (72 mins) and Aaron Morris (74 mins) saw the Linnets comfortably through to the third round.
Leek Town: Roberts, Green, Short, Grocott, Sass-Davies, Bavaganga, Reeves, Trickett-Smith, Bott, Johnson, Walford. Subs: Maguire, Stevenson, Grice, Hall. Chapman.
