Leek Town 1, Stoke City U23s 2
LEEK Town were knocked out of the Staffs FA Senior Cup by a late winner from Staffordshire Moorlands-bred Stoke U23s captain Ollie Shenton (pictured).
The attacking midfielder, from Blythe Bridge, beat Danny Roberts with a low shot in the 90th minute of an evenly fought contest.
Leek faced huge challenge against a strong international-flavoured Stoke side, who had thrashed Norwich City U23s 7-2 on their recent appearance at Harrison Park, where they play the majority of their Premier 2 home games.
Blues got off to the worst possible start when German striker Gabriel Kyeremateng, from Borussia Dortmund, put Stoke ahead from close range in the 10th minute.
However, Leek were back on level terms after 32 minutes when former Blues loanee Scott Wara turned a Billy Reeves cross into his own net.
Blues had a great chance to grab the lead in the 77th minute after Wara brought down Rob Stevenson in the area.
Dan Trickett-Smith stepped up to take the resultant penalty kick, but the former Crewe Alex and Liverpool FC midfielder shot straight at Stoke’s Hungarian keeper Daniel Gyollai and then fired the rebound over the bar.
A closely contested affair could have gone either way before Shenton struck to send the Potters through to the third round of the competition.
