Blues Babes are at the same starting point as Stoke City Ladies first team

THE commencement of the New Year will see Leek Town Ladies on the cusp of promotion to the West Midlands Women’s Regional League Premier Division.

The Blues Babes signed off before Christmas having won all their 10 games to date in Division One North and looking unstoppable in their quest for the title.

Ian Smith’s team’s only two defeats have come in the League Cup (2-1 at home to Premier Division Sutton Coldfield)  and Staffs Ladies Challenge Cup (4-0 away to Stoke City first team).

Leek did well to restrict Stoke to four goals in the county cup fixture this month as their opponents demolished Black Country Fusion 20-0 in the previous round.

The strength of the Stoke team – skippered by Meg Bowyer from Leek –  can be measured by their progress to the third round of the Women’s FA Cup.

Stoke have come a long way since starting life in the West Midlands Regional League and are currently fourth in the National League North table.

Leek are six points clear of nearest challengers Shifnal in the WMRL Division One North table and return to action at home to Florence next weekend (Jan 6).
